Treating the Whole Patient - How Jose’s Treatment Changed his Life

After the Delgado family was involved in a terrible car accident, seven-month-old Jose was rushed to the hospital, where he was treated by Dr. William L. Oppenheim, UCLA/Orthopaedic Hospital Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Among the multiple injuries Jose suffered, his leg was completely detached from his body. Seventeen years later, Jose is not only an active teenager but an undefeated amateur boxer. His journey from patient to champion athlete involved 37 operations, an incredibly supportive family, and expert orthopaedic care from
Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital (LAOH).

Jose says he could have never reached that point without the high quality care - and constant support and encouragement - his family and Dr. Oppenheim provided. “Dr. Oppenheim tries his best to help kids so they can have the best life possible. He has taught me to never give up even if you have a physical problem, like mine,” said Jose.

Now undefeated and stronger than ever, Jose plans follow his passion for boxing. “I can do anything now, I can run as fast as all the other kids.”

When it comes to healing, this support team has helped Jose overcome physical adversity and become a courageous fighter to make his dream a reality.

“We knew it would be hard to restore function to his leg, but we didn’t shy away from it. I anticipated all the medical procedures involved with Jose, but I never anticipated he would become a competitive boxer,” said Dr. Oppenheim with a smile on his face. “He has exceeded all my expectations.”
